A typical example concerning this can be seen through my own experience as a photographer of Mt Fuji for many years. As you know, Mt. Fuji (3776M) has the highest altitude in Japan, which means that it has shown us the distinct seasons of the year since ancient times in Japan. The peak is the coldest place in our  land . However, the mountain was still covered with only two large patches of snow around the peak in early November. We can usually see the mountain covered with up to 5 large patches of snow in the autumn season. This is one of the serious problems that should not be taken lightly.( I think that Jake Reiner, who lives near Mt. Fuji,  must feel  a similar
 natural change for that mountain.)
11/6(Saturday)- Sustainable Society Has Begun- Dcu Festival

This meaningful lecture taught us that most of the people who live in the world have been wasting resources with the excessive consumption of the advanced countries today. (Of course, some of the people take this issue very seriously and I truly appreciate them.)  Our overconsumption  has, in turn, been encouraging companies  to destroy  forests for  decades. At the same time, it has long been yielding polluted air on earth, caused by so many factories.  If we try to control  consumption in our daily lives, this would mean that we'd be able to cut down on pollution and take in fresh air everyday.

We all feel a warmer autumn season than usual. As you know, this is a result of  global warming. This subtle natural change on the present weather  or climate serves as  a kind of the mirror  to the environmental changes  taking place in our present state, and these daily natural changes serve as important indicators for us.

Jake Reiner  has shown that some of the best ways to cope with these solutions for  present societies is to cultivate organic vegetables in our garden as one way of limiting our consumption. It is well known that organic foods are more healthy, and good for the body. Large-scale enterprises in the world should also have the more ecological ideas about saving  natural resources  themselves. Hopefully, they can take further steps and implement more concrete ideas to voluntarily protect nature from much of the current pollution.  I wider perspective as one global family, with less emphasis on attaining more and more material benefits, is needed.

In return for such efforts, we will be able to bring back fresh air and create a more wonderful environment for our the future generations of the earth. All of us, as well as the large companies working throughout the world, need to make an effort to face these envionmental issues in our global society and to develop the perspective of  'Only One Earth'.

What is the most important thing to bring about the solutions for these matters is how we human beings will be able to share with nature the simpleidea of 'Only One Precious Earth'.  By trying
to learn from the present situation of the natural environment through our daily lives, we will realize that only  by treasuring and preserving nature can we find  ways to keep on living. It will lead  us to a brighter future for the sake of the smiles of the future's children. One of the most important keys will be left up to our global family, and to each of us who live on this planet.

Finally,  I would like to again express my sincere appreciation to Jake Reiner, who came all the way from near Mt. Fuji, for his  wonderful lecture, Suzie (who assisted in the lecture), Professor Kageyama (for organizing the lecture), David Howenstein and all the participants who came to the lecture of 'Sustainable Society Has Begun' at DCU on November 6th, 2004.
